Lithuanian studies in Klaipeda have always been closely associated with – and will remain inseparable from – the name of Professor Habilitated Doctor Audronė Jakulienė-Kaukienė. A distinguished linguist, ethnologist, and public figure, she was the true initiator of Lithuanian studies in Klaipeda. As a dedicated researcher and promoter of the culture of the Klaipeda Region and Lithuania Minor, she was also a valued fellow and collaborator of the Lietuvininkai Society “Lithuania Minor”. She was a deeply regarded Teacher of Lithuanian language studies; as the founder and long-standing leader of the folklore ensemble “Vorusnė”, she mentored generations of students who today continue to uphold her ideas and legacy at Klaipeda University.
The 5th International Scientific Conference “Baltic Languages and Cultures” invites to commemorate the establishment of Lithuanian studies in Klaipeda in 1971 – first introduced at the Klaipeda faculties of the Lithuanian State Conservatory – and to celebrate the 85th anniversary of Professor Audronė Jakulienė-Kaukienė, a foundational figure in the field. This academic forum focuses on the essential markers of cultural identity: language, national and state consciousness, and historical and cultural heritage. It seeks to explore the interaction, functions, and values of these elements, as well as the challenges and tasks emerging from globalization and the current geopolitical climate. The scope of research is broad, encompassing languages and dialects, cultural, historical, and archaeological phenomena, written and bibliographic monuments, and mythology, ethnography, and heritage reflecting regional specificities.
