John Paul II Center for Christian Studies dates back to 1995, when the Department of Catechetics in the Faculty of Pedagogy at the University of Klaipėda was established. In 2015, the Department was reorganized into a Study and Research Center. It employs six scholars: professors, associate professors, and research fellows.
The purpose of the Center is to systematically study the expression of Christianity in theological, educational, ecumenical, and cultural aspects as well as to carry out religious studies in Western Lithuania. International relations are maintained with other European universities (Rome, Florence, Helsinki, etc.), conferences and seminars are held, teachers are exchanged between institutions, the professional qualifications of employees are improved, monographs and scholarly articles are published.
The Center supervises the Master‘s program in Spiritual Counseling and Assistance (duration 2 years). Studies take place in permanent session form. Its goal is to prepare spiritual counselors / assistants who can counsel people facing spiritual crises and conflicts, existential difficulties and challenges in the contemporary world. The program employs both theologians, educators, and specialists in the field of psychology. Upon graduation, a Master of Arts in Humanities is awarded.
